Sharp Endorsements 7/15/09

Dear Fellow Texan:

The momentum continued to build this week behind John Sharp’s campaign for the United States Senate as the two top Democrats in Harris County announced their enthusiastic endorsement.

Respected Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee and Sylvia Garcia said they both back John because “Texas has a unique opportunity to send a seasoned leader to Washington at a crucial moment in history for securing economic prosperity, access to affordable health care, educational excellence, and energy independence.”

Please help make sure John has the resources to wage a winning campaign against the likely Republican nominee by contributing to the campaign now.

“John Sharp’s success is rooted in his political balance and personal integrity,” said El Franco Lee, the former state representative who in 1985 became the first African American elected to the Harris County Commissioners Court.

“No one has done more to represent our state’s rich diversity than John Sharp during his outstanding career,” agreed Garcia, the former Houston city controller who became the first Hispanic woman elected to the Harris County Commissioners Court in 2003. “I especially appreciate his commitment to safeguarding vital public services while holding the line on new taxes and wasteful government spending.”

The two leaders’ support comes in the wake of the latest University of Texas Politics Project poll, which shows John leading the entire field of declared and potential candidates for the seat if and when incumbent Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison resigns. The other candidates in the poll have negligible support or are regional politicians without a statewide presence.
