High Plains research aimed boosting safflower crop production will be showcased at a field day next Tuesday at Texas Tech University’s research farm in Lubbock. Safflower seeds are used for cooking oils and in margarine, much like sunflower seeds. Energy officials say safflower also makes an excellent feed stock for biodiesel. The safflower showcase event is hosted sponsored by Tech, Dreamland Industries Inc. and Texas AgriLife Research and Extension. The morning field day will run from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday with presentations by researchers and private seed companies, growers and processors. Tech’s research farm is located at the intersection of 2nd Street and Quaker Avenue.
